Decent at last

I can say with relief that The Dread Machine is now back sulking in its lair. I have a love-hate relationship with my sewing machine, but I usually manage to win :)

My enchanter can now show his face without blushing for lack of clothing.

The tunic and pants that he has now is a style that I wanted - of no one particular culture or time period. They remind me of early medieval men's clothing (pict, viking, saxon, rus, etc), the salwar kameez of eastern lands, and native american clothing, to name a few.

The fabrics I had set my mind on were, of course (call me perverse), ones that fray very easily - linen and silk. The silk looks a bit odd in the photo, it's better in real life :).
I won't go into gory detail, but the vision I had in my mind before I started was just a bit ambitious!! Ain't that the way . . . In the end Simplicity became my goal, apart from just finishing the damned things! :D It took three attempts for the trousers, and two for the tunic.
I tried a few samples of embroidery but decided that I'd save that sort of silliness for his next outfit.

  1. Despues de los intentos fallidos ha valido la pena. Ahora está muy formal, así suficiente.
    Buen trabajo.

  2. LOL, Oh how I can relate Glenda! A vision that in the end must be crushed by the limits of our capabilities. Plus I always just want to finish the damn thing too, LOL.
That being said, I think you did an outstanding job on his outfit! Simple to you maybe, but it looks perfect to me. I love the little leather belt around the tunic.

  3. Great job Glenda! He looks so mystical and aloof - and not of any particular era! What a nice doll too! I am on the look-out for good male dolls..... or should I say some of my LADY dolls are on the look-out! LOL! That sounds a little better! I think you did a marvelous job! Tiny stitching is hard to do!

  4. Daydreamer, thankyou - I must admit I'm quite fond of him, he's a handsome boy!
He's a Heidi Ott doll, and the good thing is that his feet, arms and hands come apart. You can make narrow sleeves and trousers and fit them easily, just pop the hands and feet back on afterwards. :)

  5. His clothes look great!!! He sure is a handsome devil. I LOVED that medieval leather jacket you made a long time ago. That was fantastic!!!

UGH! I hate sewing machines. In my case... They always win. mine drove me insane and I closed the top on it and never opened it up again.

  7. I think you got something more than simple decency...
And the fact that you are able to stay in a limbo of time and place is a great result: a little as they did in the episodes of Star Trek, where people appeared to other worlds, it was always a bit retro, even if they were of future :-)

  9. He looks great -- love the medieval belt! The kids and I made some for our own 1:1 costumes, but we should definitely try them for the mini dolls ...

  10. Thanks, ladies! :)

Catherine - that jerkin fits him, but he doesn't want to go the Tudor way . . . The codpieces are just too embarrassing!

    Ewa - thanks!

Flora - I always envied them on Star Trek where they would say 'Computer - 21st century clothing - make it so!!' and there they'd be dressed. Perfect for me with my lack of interest in clothes!! :)

Nina - what 1:1?? Do you do historical re-enactment, or is it theatre?

  12. He's looking very handsome in his new outfit. According to that outfit I would have never guessed that you have love-hate relationship with your sewing machine. The costume looks perfect in my eyes, very precise and beautiful work, Glenda :)

  14. Ahhhh, so he is a Heidi Ott, no wonder he's so cute :).

You have done a better than outstanding job with the clothes. It is a little shawal kameez like but for the collar and belt. :):). I think you should have absolutely no problem with stitching . Do you know I still hang your scarf at the back of the chair where my tribal house is so that I can look at it everyday? It is still my absolute favourite never to part with scarf.
