The lakehouse now has its exterior 'board and batten' look.
Now for some detail - :)
These battens were a rough-cut wood (I wanted this look), and were originally painted, along with the house, in the pale cool yellow which really, really wasn't right!! Everything was then overpainted in this warm gold colour. The MDF walls were quite smooth after the two coats of paint, but the battens were a pain to paint because of the rough texture and my impatience. :)
When I came to it the next day, I taped the battens in place and had a good look at the effect, which was surprisingly good! On the battens the original colour was just peeping through the new one in places, and it added depth and interest.
I've found this before in working embroidery backgounds - when you carefully mix a cool and a warm of the same shade of colour, it makes the result easier on the eye than a single pure shade.
The poppets say that I'm boring you, and would I please put the flooring in place!!
It is really looking good Glenda. I love yellow houses.
ReplyDeletecheeky little Poppets :) It looks wonderful Glenda
ReplyDeletei love the color!! and the shape of course :)
ReplyDeleteGlenda, you are in no way boring us. I love the technical details and will pay to find out how come your strokes are so perfect. Did you use air brush? I am not sure I know what you mean by using lace over the battens because I don't see any lace pattern on the batten? I feel like an idiot asking you this ...hahha :).I must be missing something obvious :):).
ReplyDeleteyes cheeky little poppets...how do they know what we like :-)
ReplyDeleteI love the yellow color. I have a pretty shed in my garden and am tempted to paint it yellow ...not sure hubby will agree though :-)
I am with Susan though and am confused about the lace. Clever idea but I can't see it lol. Or are the 2 colors meant to be that subtle.
Looks good whatever you did.
I love the battens - that look has always appealed to me. It adds a great texture.
ReplyDeleteSans - It's me who's the idiot!!! It's a typo - taped them in place (with masking tape), not in lace!!
ReplyDeleteHowever, there's a thought - using lace as a stencil to make a painted pattern!! Sans, together with my stupidity and your imagination we could go far!! Whether it would be in a sane direction would be another matter, lol :))))
Brae - thanks! I know that board and batten is not to everyone's taste, but I really wanted it for this house, it reminds me of holiday homes I saw in Finland. Plain MDF is so very flat and all of my shortcomings as a painter showed up too much!!
ReplyDeleteGlenda
"Board and batten" - very Kiwi ;)
ReplyDeleteLove the sunny colour BTW.
It's looking great and good that you have the battens, it makes it look more authentic - we have battens in our house :) And I join the Poppets, I want some flooring also - so I get to see the interior to be done :D
ReplyDeleteAnd is there anything Finnish you need in there? Just email me :)
Norma - second only to rusted corrugated iron!! And peeling lino-lined walls!! Those very old NZ back-country huts had some true shabbiness, not at all chic!! :) My mother would be having a fit at this dollshouse, not being very 'pretty' ;)
ReplyDeleteBTW yellow is not my favourite colour, but I'm enjoying this, it's making me think outside my usual conservative 'safe' places!! :))
Genda, your cottage is pretty too!
ReplyDeletethe look is sleek and simplistic... I love it!
Mini hugs, flora
It really looks good Glenda! I wish I lived there, along with some little poppets with attitude, LOL.
ReplyDeleteIt's a lovely shade of gold - it looks sort of buttery in the photos. The battens add interest as, you're right, mdf is too flat. It's such a fresh looking little property.
ReplyDeleteLove the lakehouse....you are so inspiring!! Now I want to build one! More to add to my list..lol.
ReplyDeleteMe encantan los listones en tu casita, le dan otro aire diferente al normal y junto con ese color tan bonito, hacen de tu casita un lugar muy especial!!!
ReplyDeleteGracias por tus explicaciones.
besitos ascension
The house is looking so good Glenda! I love the photo with Poppets - I think they won't tell but they admire your work;)
ReplyDeleteLove the look of the battens, very Downunder architecture. The two shades of yellow have given depth and realism. Thanks for sharing, I'm learning a lot.
ReplyDeleteIra - I'm glad the battens look ok to you! The floor so far is misbehaving a little, so when the swearing stops I'll put up a post :)
ReplyDeleteAs for 'anything Finnish' - thankyou! - you have sent me wonderful minis already!! let's see how it progresses when I start filling it :))
Con los listones has logrado un resultado fabuloso a la casita.
ReplyDeleteCreo que lo de tu impaciencia es un mal que todas sufrimos, jaja
Besitos, May
